Microscope.
The word
microscope is made of 2 Greek words micros which means small and scopos which means watcher. It is a device
used to see very small things which are invisible to human eye. Re Microscope has 2 types, simple
microscope-which is normally a magnifying glass snd compound microscope such as
in the given picture. It has 2 lens, eye piece and objective lens. Eyepiece
magnifies an image and objective shows the image to us. There are several lens
for eyepiece and objective. The compound microscope was invented between 1590
and 1610. In about 1597 two Dutch
eyeglass makers, Zaccharias Janssen and his son Hans were experimenting with
lenses in a tube. They observed that nearby objects viewed through two lenses
in line were magnified. Their device was the first compound microscope.
However, their lenses were rather large and the magnification obtained was only
about 10X.Leeuwenhock, a dutch scientist is known as “the father of
microscope” as he discovered many things of microscope. He was also the fist
scientist to see microscopic life and also the first scientist to see the whole
circulation of blood through his microscope. Galileo also designed a compound microscope, but it was only
useful for reflected light. Robert Hooke built the first useable British
compound microscope in about 1655. Minor mechanical and optical improvements
were made to compound microscopes over the years, but no major improvements
were made until the 19th century.
